Intolerance and suspicion
Makayla
Essential Question:
How do attitudes towards immigrants, blacks, and other minorities reflect the intolerance of the decade? How does the nostalgia and attitudes from the past conflict with modern ideas of the decade?
Many people were scared of immigrants, blacks, and minority groups. They were scared of communism and having them over throw them and take their jobs. They tried to stop them by using quotas. They were very suspicious of every group and did unspeakable things to get rid of them. Many new ideas developed in the 1920's what scared many religious groups.
- What caused immigration restriction? How as immigration restricted? How strong was Nativism?
- What was the KKK? What did the Klu Klux Klan stand for? How did they show the intolerance of the decade?
- What were the Red Scare and Palmer Raids? How does this fear add to the intolerance of the decade? How was the "Red Scare" an example of American's reluctance to be involved in world affairs?
- What was Sacco and Vanzetti Trial? Why were they and example of suspicion and intolerance?
- Scope Trials- fundamentalism/ creationism vs. evolution. Why was this trial indicative of conflict of old vs. new in the 1920s?

Change and Continuity
What has changed? What has remained the same?
Immigration in today's age is as big of a problem as it was in the 1920's. In the 1920's the U.S. was scared of communism spreading into our lands, they didn't want the eastern and southern Europeans to come and take their jobs as well. Today the U.S. is scared of Mexican immigrants. People from Mexico are coming into the U.S. illegally and are taking jobs from actual U.S. citizens. In today's society we people from the republican party are scared and are trying to stop Mexicans from coming to the U.S. We have a fence around the U.S. boarded connecting to Mexico.

Primary analysis (Birth of a nation)
Author- D. W. Griffith
Place and Time- It's a 1915 silent film. It took place in the southern United States.
Prior Knowledge- Blacks weren't allowed to be actors so white men played them, but put black coloring on their face. Films were a way to bond as a family so many people watched this film.
Audience- The Audience was white men and women.
Reason- The reason for this film was to give blacks a negative view. To show how mean and cruel blacks were in U.S. society.
The Main Idea- Was to show blacks being vulgar and rude animals towards women. Made the KKK seem like a heroic group.
Controversial but highly influential and innovative silent film directed by D.W. Griffith. It demonstrated the power of film propaganda and revived the KKK.
